However, some candidates have managed to crack this hurdle and secure remarkable ranks, one of them being Sparsh Verma, who secured AIR-644 in CSE-21.
Sparsh's Journey
Sparsh Verma is a graduate of Ramjas College, University of Delhi, with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Political Science. After completing his graduation in 2019, he decided to prepare for the UPSC CSE, taking it on as a full-time endeavor. Sparsh's journey was not without its challenges, as he realized that the prelims stage was the most crucial and daunting aspect of the entire examination process.
Developing a Winning Strategy
Recognizing the significance of the prelims stage, Sparsh developed his own strategy to tackle it. He understood that the prelims was more a test of aptitude than mere knowledge, and he set out to hone his problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities.
Comprehensive Preparation
Sparsh's approach to preparation was multifaceted. He meticulously followed the recommended booklist, covering subjects such as Geography, Art and Culture, Ancient and Medieval History, Polity, Environment, Science and Technology, and Current Affairs. However, he did not stop there. Sparsh made sure to read almost every other book recommended by previous years' toppers, driven by his desire to leave no stone unturned.
Mastering the Intricacies of Current Affairs
Sparsh recognized the importance of newspaper reading in building a comprehensive understanding of current affairs. He regularly read The Hindu and the Editorials and Explained Page of Indian Express, supplementing his knowledge with notes from Daily Current Affairs initiatives of Insights IAS, IAS Baba, and Vajiram IAS. Additionally, he found the Sunya IAS Monthly Magazine to be a valuable resource, often using its PDFs for his 2021 attempt.
Executing the Strategy
Sparsh believed that common sense was the most precious skill for the prelims, and he drew upon his strong academic foundation from school to build confidence and a better self-image.
Analyzing Past Year Question Papers
Sparsh placed great emphasis on thoroughly practicing the last 10 years of Prelims Question Papers (PYQs), understanding the areas where the UPSC Examination Cell had been focusing. He likened this process to Kaptaan Jack Sparrow's compass, guiding him through the treacherous waters of the prelims.
Mastering the Art of MCQ Solving
Sparsh's dedication to practice was evident in the sheer volume of MCQs he attempted. Before his first Prelims in 2020, he had practiced around 20,000 MCQs at home, honing his MCQ-solving skills and identifying his strengths and weaknesses. In the actual exam, he would attempt 86-87 questions, significantly increasing his chances of success.
